Four years ago today we buried a hero and gentleman named Leon Kolb. What Papa experienced at Pearl Harbor decades before, became such a big part of his life, whether he liked it or not. I read the following in an article online this morning covering the anniversary of 'the day of infamy...'
"Love, not bombs, almost got Leon killed that morning. He was trying to get back to his locker to save the engagement ring he had bought for his high school sweetheart and future wife of 68 years, Lucille.
He was fighting to get below, but the guys in the ship’s magazine told him to get out fast, there wasn’t any time. It saved his life. None of the men in the magazine survived that day.
'I think about them every day,' Leon said. 'How lucky I was.' "
No doubt that love was the center of this man's universe, even in the midst of tragedy. Smiling and connecting with Papa today:)
